Everything you need to know about Synthetic Diamonds

Diamond is more than just a gemstone and the most prized possession of a woman. But did you know that the diamond on your wedding band might not be natural? Yes, it’s true. Nowadays, diamonds are being created in the laboratories as well and you cannot tell the difference between a natural and a synthetic one.

To help you get an idea, here is everything you need to know about Synthetic Diamonds.

What are Synthetic or Lab-grown Diamonds?

Synthetic diamonds are also known by the names of lab-grown, man-made, cultivated, created, or cultured diamonds. As the name suggests, lab-grown diamonds are created by man. After extensive research, scientists have been able to develop an alternative to natural diamonds.

High temperature and pressure are used to imitate the conditions required to form diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds have the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds.

How are they made?

While Natural diamonds are mined around the world using different types of machinery and equipment., Synthetic diamonds are man-made and are produced in a lab.

Here’s how it is done:

High temperature and high pressure are created and then a scientist places the element carbon under high-pressure and high-temperature until a diamond crystal is formed.

There is one more way to produced synthetic diamond: chemical vapour deposition. During this process, a small seed of a diamond crystal is cultured first and then grown layer by layer in a chamber.

Are Synthetic Diamonds fake?

This is one of the biggest myths that continue to prevail among people. A lot of people assume that synthetic diamonds are not real diamonds but this is not true. Although synthetic dimaonds are not formed naturally, they have the same chemical composition and physical properties as natural diamonds, therefore, synthetic diamonds are not fake.

When it comes to synthetic diamonds and natural diamonds the structure and properties might be the same but the stunning beauty and aesthetic appeal of a natural diamond is due to the fact that is was formed billions of years ago, isn’t it incredible to wear something that was formed 150km-2500km below the earth’s crust?

Are Synthetic Diamonds more expensive?

Lab diamonds are not more expensive. In fact man made diamonds usually cost about 30% less than natural diamonds (comparable size and quality). But these diamonds are every bit as luxurious as the natural ones, since their remarkable beauty and durability are the same.

Whenever you go for online jewellery shopping or buy a diamond from an offline store, it is important to know that there’s a big difference between lab created diamonds and diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite. The diamond simulants are not made of the carbon crystals, therefore, do not possess the same brilliance and durability as diamonds. Lab stimulants sell at fairly low prices as compared to lab created diamonds.

Where can you find a Synthetic Diamond?

When it comes to lab-grown diamonds most of the diamonds are sourced directly from the laboratories. The process usually works the same. If you want to buy a synthetic diamond then you can ask for a synthetic stone to be placed in the centre of your wedding band.

A quick tip before you buy a Diamond:

Because of the low pricing, some jewellers might trick you into buying a synthetic diamond for the cost of a natural one. Therefore, whenever you buy a diamond, just make sure that you buy it from a reputed offline or online jewellery store and get it checked from an expert.

Ready to explore the tips?

Let’s get started!

Focus on one: Jewellery or Clothing

What do you want the focus of your look to be?

A statement jewellery piece can elevate even simple and dull outfit, all you need to do is chose right jewellery and accessories. Try to keep your ensembles minimal and jewellery maximum or vice versa. If you’re wearing bold ensembles, then pair your look with minimal and subtle jewellery pieces, which will highlight your overall look. You can also keep your attire low-key and then pair it with bold jewellery pieces like statement necklaces.

Know when to stop

While accessorizing, it is very important to know when to stop. You don’t want to overload yourself with so many jewellery pieces at a time, otherwise, you’ll look like a mess. For example, if you're wearing a bold pair of western earrings then keep it low-key for your neckline. Wearing a subtle necklace or no necklace at all would work very well with a bold pair of earrings.

Similarly, if you’re wearing a layered necklace or a statement necklace then you don’t need to add bangles to your look. Keep it simple and subtle and slay sassy.

Ignore the rules

Dressing up should always be personal to you just because your style is about what suits you and who you are. It’s fine to be influenced by the newest fashion and jewellery trends but doesn’t try to imitate others, instead follow your own style because what works for others might look weird on you.

While shopping for precious or artificial jewellery, always think about what works for your skin color, face and body shape/frame and the general sense of style. Take all of these things into account before you invest your time and money in online jewellery shopping.

Experiment

The key to ace a stunning look is never shy away from experimenting. All you need to do is, simply put on a very basic outfit and pair it with various pieces of jewellery pieces from your collection. Try different combinations of jewellery designs, layer your fashion necklaces, mix match your earrings, try our hair accessories and so much more. You can even consider pairing up and add different accessories like scarves, bags or watches to your look.

Once you do this, you’ll end up with a plethora of new options and styles to enhance even the most simple outfit.

Choose Earrings according to your face shape and personality

Our earrings are in direct line of vision for anyone whom we are talking to, therefore wearing the right type of earrings is really important. You should always choose earrings according to your face shape, your hair, eye colour and skin tone. Here’s how you can choose earrings according to your face shape.

4 C’s of Diamond: How to Buy a DIAMOND

You’ve probably heard about the 4 C’s of a diamond but do you really have an idea what these C’s are all about? These 4 C’s contribute to the overall aesthetic beauty and value of a diamond.

To get you an idea about the 4 C’s and their importance, we have curated a guide.

Ready to explore?

Let’s get started!

Diamond’s Cut:

The diamond cut makes the most crucial part of the selection and directly impacts a diamond’s beauty. Only 55% of all diamonds sold online are excellent cuts. Rest, some are stunning, while others are an average cut.

Diamond Cut refers to the quality of a diamond’s angles, proportions, symmetrical facets, brilliance, fire, scintillation and finishing details. These factors account for a diamond’s ability to sparkle. The overall aesthetic appeal of a diamond is the result of its cut.

It is important to invest in a diamond with an excellent cut. You can even reduce your focus in other areas like Clarity or Color to ensure an exceptional and excellent Cut.

Diamond’s Color:

The color of an authentic diamond is colorless and clear like a water droplet. The color C is graded in terms of how colorless a diamond is.

The GIA grades diamonds from D to Z, with D being the most colorless, and Z containing noticeable brown or yellow hues. This grading is usually reflected in the pricing of diamonds. In most of the cases, you cannot tell the difference between two diamonds with adjacent color grading but the prices may differ significantly.

Before going for online jewellery shopping or buying the diamond from an offline store, just make sure that color does not distract or interfere with white and colored light reflection.

Diamond’s Clarity:

Diamond’s clarity tells about the how clean the diamond is to a naked eye.

Clarity is often the least important consideration because most of the inclusions are microscopic and cannot be seen with a naked eye.

Before going for online jewellery shopping or buying the diamond from an offline store, make sure that the diamond is eye clean. Also, look out for any inclusions that might interfere with the light reflection. You can also review the stone to see if it is eye clean or ask for confirmation from an expert. Don’t fall for a certificate because it won’t tell you about the clarity. You won’t have any idea about how a diamond’s blemishes will impact the stone’s appearance and brilliance.

Diamond’s Carat:

Most of the people tend to confuse Carat weight with the size of the diamond but this is a myth. Carat refers to the weight of the diamond and not the size.

The overall appearance and brilliance should carry more importance as compared to the Carat of the diamond. For example, a mediocre and poorly cut 1.5 Carat diamond may not shine as brightly as a stunning and excellently cut 1.0 Carat diamond. Therefore, be open to lowering your Carat weight to ensure you purchase a stunning diamond.

With these 4 C’s in mind, remember that a diamond is a precious investment, therefore, should be looked at in totality, with every C analysed precisely.

Next time when you decide to go for online jewellery shopping or purchase the precious stone from an offline store, evaluate and then choose wisely.

There are mainly three types of gemstones: Natural/Real Gemstone, Lab Created Gemstone and Stimulated Gemstones.

Natural Gemstones:

Dug directly from the Earth, these gemstones are the major source of minerals found from within the Earth. Diamond is the best example of natural gemstone. Before the crafting process, It undergoes intense pressure and cutting and then finely crafted into the jewel piece.
Lab Produced Gemstones:

Black Onyx is a common a common example of lab-formulated gemstone and is often created in the labs by treating with sugar and caramelizing it with heat.

Blue Sapphires are also most of the times lab formulated. They are generally heated by the miners.
Turquoise stone beads are stabilized by dying and are hardened with resin.
How to different real gemstone from a fake one?
You don’t have to be a gemologist to identify the fake gemstones. All you need is a few handy tricks and tips which will make it easier for you to differentiate the real gemstones from the fake ones.
Let’s get started.

One of the most common techniques used is the testing the gemstone with Refractive Index Test which measures the reflection from the surface of the gemstone with a highly sensitive machine. But this can be conducted by a specialized expert only.
If you want to test the quality of gemstones then here are some quick trick and tips to test gemstones:
The very first is, feel the edges and surface of the gemstone. If it has a sandy texture, it is not a real gemstone. Also, check whether the gemstone is perfectly carved or not if it is qthen it’s lab-formulated.
Check the malleability of the gemstone by bending it because a real gemstone will break but never bend.
Check the color and texture of the gemstone. When a real gemstone is broken into smaller pieces then it has the same color as outside and is not too highly pigmented. Lab created stones use artificial colors and they have a darker color as compared to the natural ones. The real gemstones have subtle shades and not dark hues.
Soak the gemstone in water for a few days to check the colorfastness of the stones. Fake stones are dyed and hence will not be able to retain their original color while the natural ones will not lose their original color.
In order to identify whether it is a gemstone or a glass, put the stone in your mouth. If the stone turns hot after some time, it is not real. The natural stones have a thermal conductivity which means that they will borrow heat from your mouth and will stay cool for longer.

So next time whenever you go for online jewellery shopping then just make sure to cross check the gemstones with the help of our handy tips and tricks.
